The CDC states that 1 out of every 5 children in the United States has untreated dental decay. Dental care is extraordinarily important to the over all health of both children, as well as adults. In order to prevent tooth decay and increase over all oral health, practicing proper dental care is essential. Practice proper dental care with the following oral hygiene tips:

  1. Brush – Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride-containing toothpaste. Preferably, brush after each meal and especially before going to bed. Fluoride is often recommended by dentists as a form of dental repair, and aids the breakdown of dental enamel.
  2. Floss Flossing is essential to gum health. An estimated 45% of females in the United States suffer from some form of gum disease. Dental experts recommend that patients floss at least once a day to maintain healthy teeth and dental hygiene.
  3. Eat Right Balanced and nutritious meals help to increase the longevity of your teeth. Avoid carbohydrates such as candy, pretzels and chips, which can remain on the tooth surface. If sticky foods are eaten, brush your teeth soon afterwards to ensure the most hygienic dental care possible.
  4. Drink fluoridated water At least a pint of fluoridated water each day is needed to protect children from tooth decay. Fluorinated water can be found in any supermarket, and tastes identical to typical drinking water.
  5. Visit a dentist Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exam. Dentists recommend at least one visit per year for proper dental care and assessment.

Poor dental care can lead to other health complications including heart and other major organs, digestion problems, and oral pain. Taking the time to invest in proper dental care means a healthier, happier you.
